Our Story: A Family-Owned Tradition of Senior Care Excellence

Founded in 1989 as New Haven Inc., Goodlife Assisted Living was created to provide an alternative to institutional nursing homes—one that feels like home. It was created with utmost attention to setting the standard for a high quality of care in assisted living.

This section is dedicated to the late Julie Burns, whose philosophies and passion paved the way for what Goodlife Assisted Living has grown to become.

Dedication

Julie Burns
1960 – 2006

Julie’s ideas and efforts made New Haven, Inc. a prominent and innovative care provider. Without her efforts, Goodlife as we know it today would not be the same.

Julie graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. She graduated with a drive to make a positive difference. With her degree and many years of previous experience in long-term care, Julie was determined to create an innovative, new environment for seniors.

Julie and her husband, Tim Burns opened their first Community in 1989, called New Haven of Oshkosh, which was the first free-standing Community Based Residential Community in its class to serve elderly with dementia and related disabilities in Winnebago County.

With the success of New Haven of Oshkosh, Julie and Tim went on to develop several other programs. One of which was Arborview Manor.

Opened in 1993, Arborview Manor was one of the first true models of an assisted living in Wisconsin; using an apartment setting, creating an independent environment for residents, with the comfort and safety of staff and services available to meet individual needs in a community atmosphere.

Julie had the foresight and ability to be an innovator in long-term care. She was an essential part of the development and creation of the plans for all New Haven (now Goodlife) facilities, including Oakwood Manor.

Julie was passionate in her commitment to providing the highest quality of care for the residents. Her attention to detail and compassion towards the residents was instrumental to the success of Goodlife.

Our goal for Goodlife Assisted Living programs in to remain passionate in our commitment to provide the highest quality of care and services to our residents, today and in the future.

Over the years, we have grown and evolved while staying true to our commitment to compassionate, high-quality care. Today, our communities offer assisted living, memory care, and resort-style senior living, all designed to enhance quality of life.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is assisted living, and how is it different from a nursing home?

Assisted living provides a supportive community for seniors who want to maintain their independence but could benefit from help with everyday activities—like bathing, dressing, medication reminders, or enjoying nutritious meals. At Goodlife Assisted Living, residents have the privacy of their own apartments, along with a rich social calendar and resort-style amenities that truly make it feel like home.

Nursing homes, on the other hand, generally offer a higher level of medical care in a more clinical environment. They’re best suited for individuals who need 24-hour skilled nursing or ongoing rehabilitation. Assisted living bridges the gap between living fully independently and needing extensive medical oversight, focusing on comfort, choice, and quality of life.

When is it time to consider assisted living for a loved one?

Deciding when assisted living might be right is never easy. Often, it’s not a single event but a pattern of small changes. You might notice your loved one is moving more slowly, showing signs of unsteadiness, or has bruises from minor falls. Perhaps bills are piling up, medications are being missed, or their home is less tidy than it used to be.

Social withdrawal can also be a key sign—avoiding friends, skipping activities, or seeming more isolated. Choosing assisted living doesn’t take away independence; rather, it helps preserve it by providing the right level of support, safety, and social engagement so your loved one can continue enjoying life with confidence.

How much does assisted living cost, and what financial options are available?

The cost of assisted living depends on several factors, including the type of apartment, level of personal care required, and amenities offered. At Goodlife Assisted Living, we strive to keep our communities both high-quality and affordable, offering options from cozy studios to spacious two-bedroom apartments.

Financial planning is a big part of the conversation. Many families explore Medicaid programs, Veterans benefits, long-term care insurance, or special protections that allow one spouse to continue living at home without financial hardship if the other needs care. We’re here to guide you through all these options so you can make the best decision for your family.

What is memory care, and how does it help those with Alzheimer’s or dementia?

Memory care is a specialized type of assisted living designed for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. It offers a secure environment with thoughtfully crafted spaces that reduce confusion and promote comfort—like natural lighting, quieter hallways, and clear signage.

At Goodlife Assisted Living, communities like Oakwood Manor and The Manor at The Meadows are dedicated to memory care. Our trained staff understand the unique needs of residents living with memory loss, providing compassionate support, structured activities that stimulate the mind, and gentle routines that enhance safety and peace of mind.

Can I customize the care plan according to my loved one’s needs?

Absolutely. We believe in personalized care. Our team will work closely with you and your loved one to create a customized care plan that addresses specific preferences, requirements, and routines.

What kinds of activities and social opportunities do you offer residents?

Staying active and engaged is at the heart of a fulfilling life—at any age. That’s why we offer a wide variety of activities that nurture the body, mind, and spirit. Residents enjoy everything from exercise classes, water aerobics, and walking clubs to art projects, gardening, live music, and special themed events.

There are also plenty of chances to simply have fun—like happy hours in our social lounges, friendly games of bingo or cards, movie nights, and community picnics. These activities aren’t just pastimes; they’re essential to fostering friendships, maintaining cognitive health, and creating joyful moments every day.

Can couples stay together if one needs care and the other does not?

Absolutely. It’s quite common for couples to have different care needs. At Goodlife Assisted Living, we offer private apartments that allow spouses to continue living together while ensuring that each person receives the level of assistance they require.

In addition, there are financial protections in place—often called spousal impoverishment protections—that are designed to prevent one partner from losing vital assets if the other needs care. Our team can walk you through how this works, so both you and your loved one can feel secure in your choices.

What qualifications and training do your caregivers have?

Our residents’ well-being depends on the skill and compassion of our team, and we take that responsibility seriously. Caregivers at Goodlife Assisted Living are trained in personal care, medication management, and specialized techniques for assisting those with dementia or mobility challenges.

We also foster a culture of continued learning. Many of our staff participate in ongoing education to stay current on best practices in senior care, so you can feel confident knowing your loved one is supported by knowledgeable, attentive professionals.

How do I arrange a tour or learn if your community is the right fit?

The best way to see if Goodlife Assisted Living is right for you or your loved one is to visit us in person. During a tour, you’ll explore our inviting apartments, meet staff and residents, and experience firsthand the warmth of our community. It’s also an opportunity to ask questions about care, activities, dining, and costs in a relaxed setting.

We’d be happy to arrange a personalized visit at any of our locations. Simply reach out by phone or use our contact form to schedule a time that’s convenient for you.

What if my loved one requires medical attention?

While our caregivers are trained to provide basic assistance, they are not medical professionals. In case of medical emergencies, we will promptly contact you and, if necessary, seek appropriate medical assistance.
